The Land of the Vainakhs – 1974
The territory of the present-day Chechen-lngush Autonomous Republic was inhabited from time immemorial by the Chechen, Ingush and Tushin tribes, all kindred in culture and language.
They called each other “vainakhs” to distinguish their fellowtribesmen from all the other nationalities of the Caucasus (“vainakh” means “our peoplek’t’l). That is why this part of the Caucasus came to be known as “the Land of the Vaina s”.
The picture postcards making up this set_show the remarkable monuments of the ancient culture of Chechen-Ingushetia, the unique specimens of its medieval architecture, and the rugged scenery of this mountain territory.
